A surprising and deeply refreshing summer collision of tart, sweet lemonade and a robust espresso float.

Layers of cloudy lemonade and dark espresso in a tall glass
01

The Lemonade Base

Fill your tall serving glass completely with large, dense ice cubes. Pour 150ml of chilled lemonade over the ice. The lemonade should possess a good balance of tartness and sweetness to counteract the coffee's bitterness.

02

The Espresso Extraction

Extract a standard double espresso into a separate small pouring pitcher. A medium-to-dark roast works best, providing deep chocolate and caramel notes that create a satisfying contrast with the citrus.

03

The Float

Gently and slowly pour the hot espresso over the back of a spoon or onto a protruding ice cube, allowing it to rest on the surface of the lemonade. This creates a visually striking, divided presentation.

04

Service

Garnish the rim with a lemon wheel. Serve immediately with a straw, advising the drinker to agitate and mix the layers vigorously before their first sip.

While combining citrus and coffee may initially sound contentious, the Espresso Lemonade is a surprisingly harmonious and rapidly growing summer staple. Much like the Espresso Tonic, it relies on the bracing contrast between bright, fruity acidity and deep, roasted bitterness.

The success of this beverage hinges entirely on the quality of the lemonade. It must not be overly synthetic or overly sweet. A natural, slightly cloudy lemonade with a sharp, tart bite provides the necessary structural backbone to support a double shot of espresso. To avoid a clashing, sour profile, steer clear of highly acidic, light-roasted coffees for this recipe; instead, utilize a well-developed medium or dark roast whose inherent sweetness and heavy body will anchor the bright citrus notes.
