Espresso Con Panna

A classic, minimalist Italian treat featuring an intense shot of espresso crowned with a dollop of cold, whipped cream.

Yield1 beverage (approx. 45ml)
A demitasse cup with dark espresso topped with whipped cream
01

Whipping the Cream

Using a small whisk, whip a small amount of heavy cream until it holds soft peaks. It is highly recommended to use fresh cream rather than canned, overly sweetened alternatives.

02

The Extraction

Extract a standard double espresso directly into a small demitasse cup. A medium-dark roast provides the best contrast against the rich dairy.

03

The Crown

Using a spoon, gently dollop the cold whipped cream onto the surface of the hot espresso.

04

Service

Serve instantly. The beauty of the Con Panna is the fleeting temperature contrast between the freezing cold, sweet cream and the boiling, bitter espresso beneath it.

In Italian, con panna translates quite literally to “with cream.” The Espresso Con Panna is one of the oldest traditional variations of the standard espresso, predating modern flavored lattes and offering a much simpler, more concentrated indulgence.

The preparation is straightforward but demands high-quality ingredients. Because there is no steamed milk to dilute the espresso, the coffee remains as intense and acidic as a straight shot. The cold, fresh whipped cream acts as a textural and thermal barrier. As you sip, the cold dairy immediately coats the palate, softening the aggressive impact of the hot espresso that follows. For a truly authentic experience, the cream should be only very lightly sweetened, if at all, allowing the natural heavy fat of the dairy to provide the necessary balance.
